During the academic session, student visa holders are generally subject to work hours restrictions of 40 hours per fortnight.
The student visa work hours restrictions were temporarily relaxed in January 2022 to address workforce shortages in Australia. As per the Department of Home Affairs, this relaxation will end on 30 June 2023.
This means that until 30 June 2023, all continuing international students as well as new international student arrivals and secondary applicants will be able to work for more than 40 hours per fortnight in any sector of the economy and start working before the commencement of their course of study.
However, after 30 June 2023, the work hours restrictions will come into effect again to cap the number of hours worked by Student visa holders.
