From 1 July 2022, eligible skilled workers will be able to apply for permanent residence under the subclass 186 visa in the TRT stream. This will beneficially create pathways to permanent residence for previously ineligible temporary skilled visa workers. Further, these changes will also enable employers to retain skilled talent in a crucial time where there are critical shortages in the workforce.
To be eligible to apply for permanent residency, subclass 482 visa holders with occupations on the STSOL must meet the subclass 186 eligibility criteria in the TRT stream and have been in Australia for a period of at least 12 months between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021. This pathway to permanent residence has also been extended for subclass 457 visa holders with occupations on the STSOL and who held or had applied for a 457 visa on or before 18 April 2017.
